Syama Prasad Mookerjee (1901–1953) was an eminent
Indian statesman, barrister, educationist, and nationalist leader. He served as
the youngest Vice-Chancellor of University of
Calcutta, was a member of independent India's first Union Cabinet under Jawaharlal Nehru, and later founded the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, the ideological
predecessor of today's Bharatiya Janata Party.
He is also remembered for his
role in the movement that advocated the retention of western Bengal within
India during the Partition period and for his opposition to the special
constitutional arrangements then applicable to Jammu
and Kashmir.
