ॐ नमः शिवाय
Om Namah Shivaya
This is one of the most sacred mantras dedicated to Shiva. It is known as the Pañchākṣarī Mantra ("the five-syllable mantra"), referring to the syllables:
Na • Ma • Śi • Vā • Ya
The mantra means:
"I bow to Lord Shiva."
More deeply, it expresses reverence to the Supreme Consciousness that Shiva represents—the inner Self present in all beings.
Many devotees chant it:
- During meditation and prayer.
- On Mondays (Somvar), especially in the holy month of Shravana (Sawan).
- While performing Abhishekam (offering water or milk) to the Shiva Lingam.
- As a source of inner peace, devotion, and spiritual focus.
A traditional verse in praise of Lord Shiva is:
नागेन्द्रहाराय त्रिलोचनाय
भस्माङ्गरागाय महेश्वराय।
नित्याय शुद्धाय दिगम्बराय
तस्मै नकाराय नमः शिवाय॥
Har Har Mahadev! 🙏
ॐ नमः शिवाय।
