SHIVA

 

Shiva (also known as Mahadeva, Shankar, or Bholenath) is one of the principal deities of Hinduism and forms part of the Trimurti—the divine trinity of Brahma (the creator), Vishnu (the preserver), and Shiva (the transformer or dissolver).

Some of Shiva's most important symbols include:

• Trishula (Trident): Represents the three fundamental aspects of existence and the power to overcome ignorance.
• Damaru (Drum): Symbolizes the primordial sound from which creation emerges.
• Third Eye: Represents higher wisdom and the ability to perceive beyond ordinary reality.
• Crescent Moon: Signifies mastery over time and the cyclical nature of life.
• River Ganga: Flowing from his matted locks, it symbolizes purity and the descent of divine grace.
• Serpent (Naga): Represents fearlessness, power, and control over worldly desires.
• Nandi the Bull: Shiva's devoted mount, symbolizing strength, loyalty, and righteousness.

One of the most revered mantras dedicated to Shiva is:

ॐ नमः शिवाय
Om Namah Shivaya
"I bow to Lord Shiva."

Another famous verse is:

करचरण कृतं वाक्कायजं कर्मजं वा।
श्रवणनयनजं वा मानसं वापराधम्॥
विहितमविहितं वा सर्वमेतत्क्षमस्व।
जय जय करुणाब्धे श्रीमहादेव शम्भो॥

Shiva is especially worshipped during Maha Shivaratri, when devotees observe fasting, meditate, and offer water, milk, and bilva (bael) leaves to the Shiva Lingam.
