Financial Assistance to Workers of Closed Tea Gardens in West Bengal

  1. Purpose:
The scheme is designed to provide temporary financial support to workers of tea gardens that have become sick or closed, ensuring that they can sustain their basic livelihood until alternative employment or revival of the garden occurs.

  2. Eligibility:

    • Workers employed in registered tea estates that have officially closed or been declared sick.

    • Typically applies to permanent plantation workers, including field workers, factory staff, and estate staff.

  3. Duration:

    • Assistance begins three months from the date of closure of the tea garden.

    • It is intended to bridge the income gap during periods of unemployment caused by garden closure.

  4. Financial Support:

    • The amount is set by the state government and may vary depending on the worker’s role, family size, and financial requirements.

    • Disbursement is usually monthly, directly to the workers’ bank accounts, through the Labour Welfare Department or the Tea Board.

  5. Administration:

    • Managed jointly by the West Bengal Labour Welfare Department and the Tea Board of India.

    • Workers may need to provide proof of employment and the official closure notice of the tea garden.

  6. Additional Support:

    • Some schemes may also cover medical care, education for children, and skill development programs to enhance employability while waiting for re-employment.
