Maha Ashtami is one of the most sacred and spiritually significant days of Durga Puja. It is a day when millions of devotees bow before Maa Durga, the eternal embodiment of Shakti — the divine feminine power that protects righteousness, destroys evil, dispels fear and restores balance in the universe.

Maa Durga is not merely a divine figure worshipped in temples and pandals. She is the timeless symbol of courage in the face of adversity, wisdom in moments of confusion, compassion in times of suffering, and unwavering determination when truth is challenged by injustice.

On this auspicious occasion, we remember that the real meaning of worship is not confined to rituals, flowers, incense, lights or grand celebrations. True devotion begins when we cultivate strength within ourselves to stand against injustice, discipline our minds, respect others, protect the vulnerable and uphold truth even when the path is difficult.

1. The spiritual significance of Maha Ashtami

Maha Ashtami falls on the eighth lunar day, or Ashtami Tithi, of the bright fortnight of Ashwin during the Durga Puja period. It commemorates the divine power of Maa Durga in her battle against the forces of evil, most famously represented by Mahishasura in Hindu sacred tradition.

The image of the ten-armed Goddess carries profound symbolism. Her many arms represent the ability to confront multiple challenges simultaneously, while the weapons bestowed upon her by the gods represent the collective strength of righteousness. Her lion signifies courage, authority and mastery over fear and uncontrolled impulses.

Mahishasura represents not only an external force of oppression but also the inner enemies that weaken human character — arrogance, greed, hatred, jealousy, dishonesty and the misuse of power.

The enduring message of Maha Ashtami is clear: evil may appear powerful for a time, but power without righteousness cannot claim eternal victory.

2. Pushpanjali: surrendering the heart to the Divine Mother

One of the most cherished traditions of Maha Ashtami is Pushpanjali, the offering of flowers to Maa Durga with prayers and sacred mantras.

The flowers symbolise the devotee's love, humility and surrender. Yet the deepest offering is not the flower held in one's hands; it is the purity of one's intentions.

When we offer flowers to Maa Durga, let us also offer our anger, ego, jealousy, dishonesty and destructive impulses. Let us pray for the wisdom to speak truth, the courage to defend the innocent and the strength to remain steadfast in the face of adversity.

May our devotion inspire us to become better human beings, more responsible citizens and more compassionate members of society.

3. Sandhi Puja: the sacred moment of divine power

Sandhi Puja is among the most spiritually significant observances of Durga Puja. It marks the transition between the final 24 minutes of Ashtami and the first 24 minutes of Navami.

Traditionally, devotees offer 108 lotuses and light 108 lamps while worshipping the Goddess in her fierce and protective aspect. The ritual recalls the divine destruction of demonic forces and the triumph of cosmic order over chaos.

For Maha Ashtami 2026, the Sandhi Puja window in Kolkata is expected to be around 10:29 AM to 11:17 AM on Monday, 19 October, according to one published Bengali calendar; exact timings can vary slightly with the panjika followed.

The spiritual lesson is timeless: moments of transition may be difficult, but they can also become opportunities for transformation. When darkness appears strongest, the light of courage, truth and faith must not be extinguished.

4. Kumari Puja: recognising the Divine in every girl child

Kumari Puja expresses the belief that the Divine Mother can be revered in the innocence and purity of a young girl. It reminds society that feminine power is not limited to the image of a Goddess in a temple; it must also be respected in every woman and girl.

The true fulfilment of this ritual lies in our conduct beyond the place of worship.

A society that worships Maa Durga must also protect its daughters, educate its girls, oppose violence against women, reject discrimination and ensure that every child grows up with dignity, security and opportunity.

The highest form of reverence for the Divine Mother is to honour, protect and empower women in everyday life.

5. The message of Maa Durga for 2026

In our contemporary world, the battle between good and evil is not merely a story from sacred tradition. It is reflected in the daily struggle between truth and falsehood, justice and oppression, service and selfishness, courage and cowardice.

Maa Durga teaches us:

  • Stand for truth: Do not abandon what is right merely because it is difficult or unpopular.

  • Conquer the ego: Real strength does not require arrogance, humiliation of others or the exhibition of power.

  • Resist injustice: Silence in the face of wrongdoing can allow injustice to grow.

  • Protect the vulnerable: Compassion becomes meaningful when translated into responsible action.

  • Use power wisely: Authority is a responsibility to serve, not a licence to dominate.

  • Preserve inner discipline: Victory over one's own anger, greed and fear is among life's greatest achievements.

The worship of Maa Durga becomes meaningful when the values celebrated in the pandals find expression in our homes, workplaces, courts, institutions and public life.

6. A prayer to Maa Durga on Maha Ashtami

O Maa Durga, Divine Mother of the Universe,

May Your blessings illuminate our minds with wisdom and our hearts with compassion.

Grant us the courage to stand against injustice, the strength to overcome adversity, and the patience to endure difficult times without surrendering our principles.

Protect the innocent, strengthen those who suffer, guide those who have lost their way and inspire those entrusted with authority to act with honesty, fairness and responsibility.

Remove the darkness of hatred, arrogance, greed and ignorance from our hearts. Teach us that true victory lies not in defeating another human being through malice, but in conquering the weaknesses within ourselves.

May every home be blessed with peace, every child with security, every woman with dignity, every family with hope and every community with harmony.

May Bharat flourish through unity, righteousness, knowledge, courage and service to humanity.

Jai Maa Durga! Jai Shakti! Jai Bharat!

7. Maha Ashtami 2026 — a message to share

On this auspicious Maha Ashtami, may Maa Durga bless us with the courage to uphold truth, the wisdom to distinguish right from wrong, the strength to fight injustice and the humility to serve humanity.

Let us celebrate the Divine Mother not merely through rituals and festivities, but through our actions, character and commitment to righteousness.

May the light of Maa Durga dispel the darkness of fear, hatred, dishonesty and oppression. May peace prevail, justice triumph, and goodness flourish in every heart.

Let truth be our strength. Let righteousness be our path. Let service be our devotion.

Jai Maa Durga! Jai Bharat! Vande Mataram!

THE REAL TEST BEGINS WHEN TRAINING ENDS

THE REAL TEST BEGINS WHEN TRAINING ENDS

When a person is selected for a specific assignment, every possible facility may be placed at their disposal. But the real question is not how comfortably that person is trained; it is how faithfully that person performs when the time comes to execute the assignment.

In certain situations, individuals are carefully identified for a particular purpose. They are offered attractive facilities, financial incentives, privileged access, luxurious surroundings, and every possible comfort considered necessary to prepare them for their designated role.

Their training may take place in an atmosphere that appears almost dreamlike. Their confidence is strengthened, their abilities are refined, and their minds are gradually conditioned to accept a particular objective as the ultimate purpose of their preparation.

Everything may appear comfortable, promising, and rewarding.

But beneath that attractive exterior, a different reality may be taking shape.

The facilities are provided for a purpose. The training is designed to achieve an objective. And the expectations of the employer may be far more demanding than the comforts enjoyed during the preparation period.

Eventually, the moment arrives when the person is expected to perform the assigned task. The employer no longer wishes to see potential, preparation, or promises. The employer demands results.

At that decisive moment, the individual may discover that the freedom enjoyed during training has considerably narrowed. Personal preferences may no longer matter. Independent judgment may become unwelcome. Questions of morality, responsibility, and conscience may be treated as obstacles rather than essential considerations.

The person who once enjoyed every facility may suddenly find themselves bound by expectations, obligations, and pressures that leave little room for independent choice.

The central question then becomes: Will the individual follow the dictates of conscience, or surrender personal judgment to the demands of the person who financed, trained, or groomed them?

This is where the real test of character begins.

When comfort becomes a chain

Not every generous offer is necessarily an act of goodwill. Not every attractive opportunity comes without expectations. And not every training programme is designed solely to promote the independent development of the individual.

Where benefits are provided with concealed conditions, those benefits may eventually become instruments of influence. Financial dependence, emotional conditioning, personal loyalty, and the fear of losing privileges can make it difficult for an individual to resist instructions, even when those instructions conflict with personal convictions or the public good.

However, it is equally important to remember that training, financial support, and professional opportunities are not inherently suspicious. The decisive issue is whether the person retains the freedom to act ethically, lawfully, and independently.

A person of integrity understands that gratitude does not require blind obedience, and professional responsibility does not eliminate moral responsibility.

No amount of luxury can compensate for the loss of conscience. No privilege can justify the abandonment of integrity. And no training can excuse the deliberate violation of law or the betrayal of public trust.

Bharat understands the importance of preparedness

Today, Bharat must remain alert to individuals, organisations, and external influences that may seek to advance their interests at the expense of India's sovereignty, security, institutions, or social harmony.

The country must assess potential threats through intelligence, evidence, professional investigation, and lawful procedures. It must distinguish genuine wrongdoing from unsupported allegations and ensure that every individual is treated fairly under the law.

Our national response must rest on institutional strength, technological capability, strategic foresight, and the professionalism of those entrusted with protecting the country.

Bharat must never underestimate the importance of understanding how influence is created, how loyalties may be cultivated, and how apparently attractive arrangements can sometimes carry obligations that emerge only at a later stage.

But our greatest strength will not come from suspicion alone. It will come from the ability to identify real threats, establish facts, act decisively within the law, and preserve the integrity of our institutions.

Bharat will not be guided by fear. Bharat will be guided by facts, preparedness, national interest, and constitutional principles.

The final test: loyalty, duty, and conscience

When the decisive moment arrives, the comforts of yesterday become irrelevant. What matters is the decision taken today.

Will a person stand by truth when falsehood is more convenient? Will they defend justice when obedience offers greater personal benefits? Will they protect the public interest when private obligations demand otherwise?

These are questions that cannot be answered by examining a person's training, appearance, wealth, or privileges. They can be answered only by examining their conduct when their integrity is put to the test.

For Bharat, the objective must remain clear: strengthen our defences, protect our institutions, expose unlawful activities through credible evidence, and ensure that no individual or organisation is permitted to place private loyalties above the law.

We must remain united, vigilant, disciplined, and confident in our ability to overcome challenges.

The training may be luxurious. The preparation may be elaborate. The promises may be attractive. But when the moment of execution arrives, the truth is revealed through action.

Bharat is prepared to face its challenges. We shall meet them with courage, intelligence, unity, and an unwavering commitment to our national interests.

WE SHALL STAND FIRM. WE SHALL PROTECT BHARAT. WE SHALL WIN THROUGH WISDOM, UNITY, AND RESOLVE.

THE NEW GLOBAL STRUGGLE FOR FREEDOM: SOVEREIGNTY, NATURAL RESOURCES AND NATIONAL IDENTITY

THE NEW GLOBAL STRUGGLE FOR FREEDOM: SOVEREIGNTY, NATURAL RESOURCES AND NATIONAL IDENTITY

The world is witnessing a new kind of struggle for freedom.

In many parts of the world, nations are confronting challenges that cannot be understood solely through the traditional definition of a freedom struggle. This is no longer always a question of breaking free from direct foreign rule or removing a foreign flag from national territory. Increasingly, the debate concerns something equally fundamental: the right of a nation to retain control over its natural resources, economic wealth, strategic assets, cultural identity, political institutions, and national destiny.

The central question is changing.

Who truly controls a nation—its own people and institutions, or external interests capable of influencing its economy, resources, policies, and strategic decisions?

This is the question that every sovereign nation must confront with seriousness and foresight.

1. The changing meaning of the freedom struggle

In earlier centuries, freedom movements generally sought independence from colonial administration, foreign occupation, or direct political domination. The struggle was visible: foreign armies, colonial governments, imposed laws, and external rulers.

Today, the methods of influence can be considerably more complex.

Economic dependence, unsustainable debt, control over strategic infrastructure, competition for minerals and energy, external political pressure, information manipulation, and unequal commercial arrangements can all affect a country's ability to make independent decisions.

Not every foreign investment, international agreement, loan, or diplomatic partnership represents exploitation. International cooperation can contribute substantially to development. The real concern arises when an unequal relationship undermines a country's freedom to determine its own priorities or prevents its people from receiving a fair share of their nation's wealth.

The modern freedom struggle, therefore, must also include the defence of economic sovereignty, resource ownership, institutional independence, and the right to make national decisions without coercion.

A country may possess a national flag, an elected government, and internationally recognised borders, yet still face serious challenges to its economic and strategic independence.

That is why political independence must be accompanied by economic resilience and responsible national governance.

2. From territorial invasion to strategic control

The methods through which powerful states pursue their interests have evolved. Direct military invasion remains a reality, but influence can also be exercised through financial arrangements, trade restrictions, control of critical supply chains, strategic infrastructure, technology, and diplomatic pressure.

Sometimes, several countries may coordinate their policies to advance common strategic interests. Such cooperation is not inherently unlawful or illegitimate. However, when coordinated pressure is used to undermine another country's sovereign choices or obtain disproportionate control over its assets and resources, it deserves close scrutiny.

The objective of national policy must be to recognise these risks before they become irreversible.

The greatest danger is not always the loss of territory. It can also be the gradual loss of the freedom to decide how that territory, its resources, and its economic future will be governed.

Every nation must therefore develop the capacity to distinguish genuine partnership from arrangements that create excessive dependence.

3. Lessons from South Asia: Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Nepal

The developments in Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and Nepal have demonstrated, in different ways, the importance of political stability, economic resilience, public confidence, and the preservation of national decision-making.

These countries have distinct histories and circumstances, and their situations should not be treated as identical.

Sri Lanka's economic crisis highlighted the serious consequences that can emerge from a combination of domestic policy failures, foreign-exchange shortages, debt pressures, and external economic vulnerabilities. Its experience underlined the importance of prudent financial management and sustainable development.

Bangladesh has experienced major political upheaval, reflecting complex domestic questions concerning governance, political legitimacy, public participation, and the relationship between citizens and institutions. Its future will depend significantly on the ability of its people and institutions to pursue stability, accountability, and national interests.

Nepal, with its distinctive geography and position between major regional powers, faces the continuing challenge of protecting its policy independence while maintaining constructive relationships with its neighbours and other international partners.

These experiences offer an important lesson: national sovereignty must be protected not only at international negotiating tables but also through strong domestic institutions, economic discipline, public trust, and accountable governance.

It would be premature to conclude that every crisis or political transition in these countries was orchestrated by an external aggressor. Such claims require specific evidence. Nevertheless, the possibility of external influence, wherever relevant, must be assessed carefully rather than ignored or presumed without investigation.

4. Europe and Argentina: the struggle to preserve national interests

Across Europe, debates about national identity, migration, energy security, industrial competitiveness, economic policy, and the powers of national institutions continue to influence political life. Different countries are approaching these questions in different ways, reflecting their own histories and democratic choices.

Argentina, too, has faced difficult questions involving economic independence, inflation, public debt, natural resources, industrial development, and the relationship between domestic priorities and international financial commitments.

These situations are not necessarily manifestations of a single coordinated global struggle. Yet they illustrate a broader concern shared by many societies: how to participate in an interconnected world without surrendering the ability to determine their own future.

Every nation has the right to debate its national priorities, preserve its legitimate cultural heritage, protect its resources, and demand accountability from those exercising political and economic power.

But national identity should not become a justification for hostility towards other communities. A confident nation can protect its traditions while respecting the equal dignity and rights of others.

5. Bharat's challenge is distinctive

Bharat's circumstances are particularly complex.

Our country possesses an enormous geographical expanse, extraordinary linguistic diversity, multiple ethnic and cultural traditions, numerous religious communities, and a civilisational heritage extending across thousands of years.

This diversity is one of India's greatest strengths. It is also a responsibility requiring wisdom, constitutional discipline, and continuous efforts to maintain social harmony.

The challenge of protecting India's sovereignty cannot be addressed through economic or military measures alone. It requires the coordinated strength of our institutions, our economy, our armed forces, our scientific capabilities, our educational system, and our people.

Bharat must remain alert to attempts at external coercion, economic exploitation, interference in strategic sectors, and activities that undermine institutional integrity. At the same time, we must distinguish verifiable threats from speculation and legitimate criticism from deliberate unlawful interference.

Our constitutional framework, democratic institutions, and social cohesion must remain central to our national response.

A diverse Bharat cannot afford to allow its diversity to become a source of permanent division. Our diversity must be the foundation of our collective resilience.

No external pressure should be permitted to turn our internal differences into instruments of national weakness. Equally, no appeal to nationalism should be used to silence lawful disagreement or weaken the constitutional rights of citizens.

A united nation is not one in which everybody thinks alike. It is one in which people with different beliefs and backgrounds remain committed to the same constitutional framework and the security, dignity, and future of their country.

6. Nationalism as resistance to exploitation

Nationalism, in its constructive and constitutional form, is the determination of a people to protect their country's sovereignty, resources, institutions, and collective future.

It means ensuring that natural resources are managed responsibly and that their benefits serve the people. It means preventing strategic dependence from becoming a mechanism of coercion. It means strengthening domestic industries, investing in research and innovation, protecting critical infrastructure, and creating opportunities for future generations.

It also means demanding transparency in agreements involving public assets, public money, natural resources, and strategic interests.

True nationalism is not merely the display of a flag or the repetition of patriotic slogans. It is the practical defence of national interests through competent governance, economic strength, public accountability, and social unity.

If an external actor seeks an unfair advantage, the answer must be strategic preparedness. If an agreement is harmful, it must be examined through lawful and diplomatic means. If domestic weaknesses make the country vulnerable, those weaknesses must be corrected.

Blaming outsiders for every internal problem will not strengthen Bharat. Recognising external risks while honestly addressing our own shortcomings will.

7. What Bharat must do

To protect our independence in an increasingly competitive world, Bharat must continue to:

  • Protect natural resources: Ensure transparent, sustainable, and accountable management of minerals, energy, water, land, and other strategic assets.

  • Strengthen economic independence: Build competitive domestic industries, support innovation, diversify supply chains, and avoid excessive dependence on any single foreign partner.

  • Safeguard strategic infrastructure: Improve the resilience of critical systems, including energy, telecommunications, transport, finance, and digital networks.

  • Maintain diplomatic balance: Develop constructive relationships with different countries without allowing any one external power to dictate India's national priorities.

  • Strengthen democratic institutions: Promote transparency, accountability, the rule of law, and public confidence in governance.

  • Protect social harmony: Reject efforts to exploit religious, linguistic, ethnic, or regional differences for unlawful purposes.

  • Invest in future generations: Develop scientific knowledge, education, technology, defence capabilities, and economic opportunities so that national independence rests on real capacity rather than rhetoric.

These are the foundations upon which durable sovereignty is built.

8. Bharat must remain confident, united, and prepared

Our struggle is different in important respects because the scale and diversity of our nation demand an unusually broad understanding of national security.

We must protect our borders, but we must also protect our institutions. We must defend our resources, but we must also manage them responsibly. We must preserve our civilisational heritage, but we must also embrace knowledge, innovation, and progress.

Above all, we must understand that external pressure becomes more dangerous when a country is internally divided, economically vulnerable, or institutionally weak.

Bharat's strength lies in the combined power of its people, the competence of its institutions, the resilience of its economy, the professionalism of its armed forces, and the constitutional principles that hold our diverse society together.

We must neither underestimate genuine challenges nor allow fear to replace reason. We must cooperate with the world where cooperation benefits our people, negotiate firmly where our interests require protection, and resist coercion through lawful, proportionate, and strategically sound measures.

Our objective must not be to dominate other nations. Our objective must be to ensure that no nation can dominate Bharat or dictate the legitimate choices of the Indian people.

The final message

The freedom struggles of the modern age may take different forms in different countries. For some, the principal challenge is economic survival. For others, it is political stability, resource protection, strategic autonomy, or the preservation of national identity.

Bharat must learn from the experiences of other nations without assuming that every country faces the same adversary or follows the same historical path.

Our answer must be clear: strengthen the nation from within, protect its resources, uphold constitutional values, maintain social unity, and ensure that international cooperation always serves the legitimate interests of the Indian people.

We have the history, the human resources, the scientific potential, and the determination to meet the challenges ahead.

Bharat will stand firm. Bharat will remain united. Bharat will protect its sovereignty. And through wisdom, hard work, national solidarity, and strategic foresight, we shall overcome the challenges before us.

THE FUTURE OF BENGAL FOOTBALL: WHERE ARE OUR HOMEGROWN TALENTS?

THE FUTURE OF BENGAL FOOTBALL: WHERE ARE OUR HOMEGROWN TALENTS?

The Government of West Bengal must seriously examine why Bengali Hindu footballers appear to have a limited presence in the playing squads of our major football clubs today.

This is an important question concerning Bengal's sporting heritage, the development of local talent, and the opportunities available to the younger generation. It deserves a careful, evidence-based investigation rather than mere speculation or emotional reactions.

Mohun Bagan and East Bengal are not merely football clubs. They are institutions deeply connected with Bengal's history, cultural identity, sporting traditions, and collective emotions. For generations, these clubs have inspired countless young people to dream of becoming professional footballers.

During my adolescent years, I remember seeing numerous Bengali footballers representing Mohun Bagan, East Bengal, and other prominent clubs. Their performances generated enormous enthusiasm among supporters and encouraged young boys from villages, small towns, and cities to take up football seriously. Local grounds served as nurseries of talent, and many aspiring players dreamed of one day wearing the colours of these historic clubs.

Naturally, this raises an important question today:

Are we providing sufficient opportunities to identify, develop, and promote talented young footballers from Bengal, particularly those who aspire to represent our major clubs?

Perhaps one contributing factor is an inadequate supply of players who currently meet the technical, tactical, physical, and professional standards required at the highest level. But that possibility must not be accepted without investigation. There may also be shortcomings in grassroots coaching, access to quality playing fields, financial assistance, nutrition, competitive exposure, talent identification, or pathways from district-level football to professional clubs.

The actual reasons must be established through systematic research, reliable data, and consultation with experienced footballers, coaches, club officials, and sports administrators.

My proposal to the Government of West Bengal

The State Government, through its Sports Department, should constitute a special expert committee to examine the present state of grassroots football in Bengal and recommend practical measures for developing the next generation of footballers.

The committee should include distinguished former footballers, experienced coaches, sports administrators, and experts in youth development.

The experience and guidance of eminent football personalities such as Subrata Bhattacharya, Manoranjan Bhattacharya, Samaresh Chowdhury, Shyam Thapa, and Baichung Bhutia could be sought, subject to their availability and willingness to participate.

Their experience of professional football, knowledge of player development, and understanding of the challenges facing young athletes could help formulate a meaningful and sustainable programme.

The committee should have a clear mandate and a time-bound action plan.

1. Identify talent in villages, towns, and districts

Talent identification must extend beyond Kolkata and the established football centres.

Regular trials and scouting camps should be organised across every district, including rural blocks, small towns, and economically disadvantaged areas. Young players who possess natural ability but lack financial resources, professional connections, or access to recognised academies must receive a fair opportunity to demonstrate their skills.

Talent should not remain undiscovered merely because a player comes from a remote village.

2. Provide professional coaching and modern training facilities

Identifying talent is only the beginning. Young footballers require structured training, qualified coaches, fitness programmes, proper nutrition, injury prevention, sports psychology, and regular competitive exposure.

The State Government should strengthen district-level football academies and establish transparent pathways through which promising players can progress from school and local-club football to state-level competitions and professional teams.

3. Introduce government scholarships for talented players

No genuinely talented footballer should have to abandon the sport simply because his or her family cannot afford the expenses of professional training.

The Government should introduce merit-based sports scholarships for deserving young footballers, with particular support for economically disadvantaged families.

Depending on individual needs and eligibility, assistance could cover:

  • Coaching and academy fees.

  • Football boots, kits, and other sporting equipment.

  • Travel and accommodation for trials and competitions.

  • Nutrition, fitness, and medical support.

  • Educational expenses, enabling young players to continue their studies alongside sporting development.

Such scholarships would help families view football as a viable career pathway without forcing young athletes to sacrifice their education.

4. Connect schools, colleges, local clubs, and professional teams

A coordinated development structure should connect school football, college competitions, district associations, local clubs, recognised academies, and professional teams.

Regular age-group tournaments should be organised to identify promising players and monitor their progress over several years.

The objective should be to create a dependable pathway from the village football ground to the professional stadium.

5. Examine the representation of local players in major clubs

The committee should collect and analyse data concerning the participation of locally developed footballers in the youth academies, reserve teams, and senior squads of major clubs, including Mohun Bagan and East Bengal.

The investigation should examine how many players are being developed locally, how many progress to senior-level football, and what obstacles prevent promising young players from reaching the professional stage.

This would help establish whether the primary challenges lie in grassroots development, coaching standards, recruitment practices, financial constraints, or the wider structure of professional football.

The purpose must not be to compel clubs to select players on the basis of religion. Selection for professional football must remain grounded in merit, ability, performance, discipline, and potential. At the same time, every deserving young player must have a fair opportunity to develop those qualities, irrespective of economic background or geographical location.

The historical contribution of Bengali Hindu footballers to Bengal's sporting culture is worth remembering and discussing. However, the broader objective must be to strengthen football in Bengal by creating opportunities for all talented local players while ensuring that concerns about representation are examined fairly and objectively.

Bengal's football heritage deserves practical action

Nostalgia alone cannot restore the former glory of Bengal football. We must understand the present, identify weaknesses, and invest in the future.

A talented boy or girl should not be lost to football because of poverty. A promising player from a village should not remain invisible because professional scouting never reaches that area. A deserving athlete should not be denied an opportunity because of a lack of resources or connections.

These are challenges that require coordinated action by the State Government, sports administrators, football associations, educational institutions, coaches, and professional clubs.

My earnest appeal to the Government of West Bengal is to take this matter seriously, constitute an expert committee of experienced former footballers and sports professionals, investigate the actual reasons, and introduce a comprehensive programme of grassroots talent identification, professional training, and government-funded scholarships.

This is not merely a matter of sporting nostalgia. It is an investment in our youth, our sporting institutions, and Bengal's future.

Let the football grounds of our villages become nurseries of excellence. Let talented players from every district receive the opportunity to prove themselves. Let our historic clubs remain centres of inspiration for generations to come.

Our past is our pride. Developing the present is our responsibility. Building the future of Bengal football is our collective duty.

This initiative is a MUST-DO.
