Advocate Ashok Kumar Singh: A Decade of Devotion at Alipore Criminal Court

Advocate Ashok Kumar Singh: A Decade of Devotion at Alipore Criminal Court

Introduction

From approximately ten years ago, Advocate Ashok Kumar Singh—a seasoned practitioner of criminal law at the Alipore Criminal Court, Kolkata—has marked the holy occasion of Ganesh Chaturthi within the courthouse precincts. Through consistent celebration, he brought a touch of spirituality to the otherwise solemn realm of legal proceedings, fostering camaraderie and reverence among legal professionals.

Celebratory Tradition

Every year, Advocate Singh orchestrated a modest but sincere Ganesh Chaturthi observance at his chambers or within the court premises:

  1. A beautifully crafted clay idol of Lord Ganesha would arrive early in the day.
  2. The morning began with traditional aarti and chanting, resonating through the corridor of justice.
  3. Devotees—comprising fellow advocates, court staff, and occasionally even judges—joined in, creating a collective moment of prayer, offering modaks, flowers, and fruits.
  4. The ceremony concluded with a short dhun or mantra, culminating in a communal sense of peace, purpose, and goodwill.

Purpose & Impact

  1. Spiritual Respite: In the hustle of criminal cases and court schedules, these few moments of devotion acted as a spiritual pause—a reminder of faith and humility transcending the courtroom.
  2. Fostering Unity: The observance became a point of connection across professional boundaries—junior advocates standing shoulder to shoulder with veterans, court clerks smiling alongside litigants, all unified by reverence for Lord Ganesh.
  3. Cultural Integration: Traditionally more subdued in Kolkata compared to other regions, Ganesh Chaturthi used to be a private affair. Singh’s initiative brought cultural richness into the legal environment, celebrating tradition in a new locale.
  4. Enduring Legacy: Over the years, this small tradition became known as the “Ganesh Puja at Alipore Court”, anticipated and appreciated by the court’s community.

Ganesh Chaturthi

Ganesh Chaturthi

Ganesh Chaturthi, also known as Vinayaka Chaturthi, is one of the most celebrated Hindu festivals in India, dedicated to Lord Ganesha, the remover of obstacles and the god of wisdom, prosperity, and good fortune. It usually falls in the month of Bhadrapada (August–September) according to the Hindu lunar calendar.

The festival marks the birth of Lord Ganesha, son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. People bring beautifully crafted clay idols of Ganesha into their homes and public pandals, and worship Him with devotion through rituals, chanting of mantras, Vedic hymns, and offerings of flowers, fruits, and His favorite sweet – modaks.

Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated with great grandeur in states like Maharashtra, Karnataka, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, and Goa, and has also spread worldwide among Indian communities. The celebration usually lasts from one and a half days to ten days, depending on family or community tradition.

A significant part of the festival is the visarjan (immersion) of Ganesha idols in water bodies, symbolizing the cycle of creation and dissolution in nature. Devotees chant “Ganapati Bappa Morya, Pudhchya Varshi Lavkar Ya” (O Lord Ganesha, come again soon next year) during the immersion procession, expressing both joy and devotion.

Beyond its religious importance, Ganesh Chaturthi also promotes social unity, art, and culture. Public pandals often become centers of cultural activities, music, dance, and social service.

At its core, Ganesh Chaturthi teaches the values of faith, humility, gratitude, and community harmony, while invoking Lord Ganesha’s blessings for wisdom, prosperity, and success in all endeavors.
