Competence Must Prevail Over Political Patronage

The reported dissatisfaction of the Learned Judge over the inexperience and lack of preparation of certain government advocates raises a serious concern about the administration of criminal justice. A Public Prosecutor is not an agent of the ruling political party but an officer of the Court entrusted with protecting justice and public interest. Although governments may change, the panel of Public Prosecutors should not be altered merely to accommodate political loyalists. Appointments must be based on legal knowledge, courtroom experience, integrity and professional competence. An unprepared prosecutor causes unnecessary adjournments, delays trials and prejudices victims, accused persons and society. Public prosecution is a solemn responsibility—not a political reward. Governments may change, but justice must always remain independent, impartial and professionally competent.
